About Jazz on the Terrace

Allen Smith, an architect, founded Jazz on the Terrace in 1982.

The first concert promoted was a performance of "Episodes" a piece written by Noel Kelehan for Louis Stewart with a jazz group and chamber ensemble and performed in the National Concert Hall on 31 January 1982.

Jazz on the Terrace promoted the first Dublin jazz festival in 1984, "Jazz Fusion 84". In succeeding years it was followed by the Dublin International Jazz Festival 1986, Dublin International Jazz Festival 1987, Dublin International Jazz Festival 1988 and Dublin Jazz 1991 to coincide with the year that Dublin was the European City of Culture.

From 1988 until 1996 Jazz on the Terrace promoted many jazz concerts and arranged tours in the whole of Ireland involving Irish and foreign musicians working together. It has always been a policy to try to have this situation.

Jazz on the Terrace from its inception up to 1991 worked with Newpark Music Centre in providing workshops by the visiting musicians that came to perform in festivals and concerts.

From 1988 up to the present time Jazz on the Terrace has acted as an agent for both Irish, American and European jazz musicians.

Jazz on the Terrace as Terrace Records has produced two LPs.

A live recording was made with Dave Liebman, Caris Visentin and the Guilfoyle Nielsen Trio in 1989. "Tomorrow's Expectations" was IMC Records first release in 1995 with Allen Smith as executive producer.

Allen Smith was one of the co-founders of the Improvised Music Company in 1991 with Ronan Guilfoyle, Blaise Smith and Cormac Larkin. Allen Smith is a Board Member and the Company Secretary of the Improvised Music Company.

Allen Smith has acted as the honorary treasurer and the honorary secretary of the Dublin Jazz Society.
