What's going on?
Allen on Four FM
Sunday, March 01, 2009
Ireland has recently seen the launch of 4 FM a brand new multi-city radio station, broadcasting to counties Dublin, Cork, Limerick, Galway and Clare. Among the DJs lined up to present their varied schedule, aimed at the over forties, is Allen Smith, the man behind Jazz on the Terrace and this website (and my father!). You can hear Allen play an eclectic selection of Jazz every Wednesday from 9pm til 10pm. Continuing his role as a promoter and supporter of Irish jazz talent you can expect to hear many new and familiar Irish musicians alongside their international peers on Allen's show. This Wednesday's show celebrates the launch of 4 FM and Jazz on Four by focusing on the number four and multiples and divisions of it. You can expect to hear among others the Count Basie Orchestra, Tommy Halferty and Mike Nielsen, Chet Baker and Blossom Dearie. The track list also includes a song composed by Paul McCartney and John Lennon. Did I mention eclectic? So tune in on Wednesday 4th March at 9pm, sit back, and enjoy! The full playlist will be posted here after each show and will include all the usual details and track length, album, composers and labels. A treasure trove for any music fan! You can listen on 94 or 104 FM in the counties mentioned above ( click here to check the exact frequency for your area). Online broadcast will be coming soon and all programmes will be available online to listen to again for seven days after broadcast. Allen would like to take this opportunity to wish all his fellow presenters and the team and management of 4 FM all the best in their exciting, new endeavour. What began as a conversation between David Berkman the New York jazz pianist and Allen Smith over a cup of coffee in Dalkey village has come to fruition in this tour. David has visited both Scotland and Ireland regularly over the past few years performing with outstanding exponents and now brings these musicians together.
Michael Buckley, Ireland's finest saxophonist and Sean Carpio, the phenomenal Dublin drummer are the EIRE in AMEIRESCO. Aidan O'Donnell, born in Ireland but living in Scotland is the Irish/Scottish link. Paul Bancroft and Paul Towndrow are the SCO in AMEIRESCO. Phil Bancroft is a multi reed player demonstrating his prowess on tenor, alto and soprano. Paul Towndrow on the other hand displays his skills on the alto.
The unique quality of the AMEIRESCO Sextet is that the leader is an outstanding jazz composer and arranger. David Berkman has been writing and performing his music and his recordings have showcased his writing skills. Michael Buckley had his compositions first recorded on his debut album "Pendulum" and has been wiriting ever since. Phil Bancroft has been composing for some time whereas Paul Towndrow is a relatively new writer. This tour will afford the Irish audiences an opportunity to hear these fine composers demonstrate their command of the classic jazz repertoire in this unusual jazz line-up.

"After many years during which only the guitarist Louis Stewart was consistently connected with the international jazz world, many Irish jazz musicians have developed relationships with counterparts elsewhere, notably through involvement with jazz education. Opportunities for Irish audiences to hear, and for Irish musicians to play with, leading international jazz figures have also been increasing steadily. Individual enthusiasts have played an important role in this movement: the architect Allen Smith established Jazz on the Terrace as a vehicle for the promotion of jazz concerts from 1982 and has been associated with the Improvised Music Company from 1991."- The Encyclopedia of Ireland, Brian Lalor, Editor, Gill & Macmillan Ltd, Dublin 2003. | |
