The Cabinet of Doctor Caligari
 A
silent film directed by Robert Wiene. Made in 1919. A classic
horror film, it is a brilliant example of that dark and twisted
film movement known as German expressionism. Robert Wiene and a
team of designers built a nightmare realm in which light, shadow
and substance are abstracted in the expressionist sets. It
starred Conrad Veidt, Werner Krauss and Lil Dagover. Willi
Hameister was the photographer. The demented Doctor Caligari and a
carnival sleepwalker bring terror to the community of a small
town. Allowing for certain primitive aspects, it still has the
power to thrill.
The
strength of the film is added to in this presentation which will
be shown accompanied by a live score written by Matthew Nolan and
Cameron Doyle and performed by the group 3epkano, of which they
form a part. The score brilliantly fuses electronic and acoustic
instruments intensifying the atmosphere already there. The film
will be shown using a 16mm projector and this version has English
intertitles
The Foley Show
Ireland’s
least known biggest export industry. Foley was invented by a man
whose Irish parents emigrated to America. Jack Foley worked in the
silent film industry. When sound came to films he invented a way
of putting incidental noise on to the soundtrack. This became
known as foley. Foley has changed since the 1930s with the advent
of digital recording technologies, foley is now used in
advertisements, on television, in films, on radio and in computer
games.
The
Foley Show will give an inside look at how foley is actually
made every day in foley studios across the world. Macdara Smith
and Caoimhe Doyle, both Irish foley artists will lead the members
of the audience through the process and show them the nuts and
bolts of foley. They will be joined by Fionan Higgins who will
record the foley
 Macdara
Smith is based in Paris. He is a foley artist, singer,
trumpeter and performance artist. He has worked on numerous French
films including “Sur Mes Levres” (Read My Lips)
directed by Jacques Audiard which won a French Cesar for the best
soundtrack in 2003.
Caoimhe
Doyle was trained by leading foley artist Andy Malcolm in
Canada. Caoimhe has worked on many Irish productions including
Neil Jordans's "The Good Thief" and "The Actors"
by Conor McPherson. Her international work includes "Reign Of
Fire” by Rob Bowman, "Ella Enchanted" by Tommy
O'Haver and "Mindhunters” by Renny Harlin.
Fionan Higgins is
a Master in Music from Queen’s University. He has worked
with various international acts. He is now head of post production
at Synctank, part of Windmill Studios. His recent work includes
Lance Daly’s “The Halo Effect” and Ciaran
O’Connor’s “Capital Letters”.
